12 Ways to give your business a makeover this winter
By Jaclyn Bailie
Winter seems to have set in early this year, with cold snaps sneaking into town as early as April. Did you know that the winter blues are a real thing? People tend to slow down and do a lot less during the colder months. But it doesn’t have to be that way for your business! In fact, winter is the perfect time to work on your business.
By now, most corporate retailers already have their Christmas marketing plans in place, and they’re gearing up to stock their shelves with spring and summer merchandise in the coming months.
So, what can you do to stay motivated and build some much-needed momentum in your business during winter?

Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of the season:
1. Plan Ahead
Take some time to write a plan for your business. Start with where you’re at now, and map out where you want to be in 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years from now. Having a clear vision will keep you focused and motivated, especially during quieter periods when business naturally slows down.
2. Work on Your Marketing Strategy
Marketing is all about making your brand familiar to your target audience.
Begin by identifying who your ideal customers are and the kind of language they use when talking about your product or service. Use their words in your marketing – speak to their pain points and clearly explain how your business provides the solution.
3. Be Visible
Join relevant Telegram, WhatsApp, and Facebook groups. Post regular ads and updates, but be sure to read the group rules first to avoid getting banned. Consistency is key!
4. Give Back to the Community
Get involved with local charities. Supporting your community is not only rewarding, but it also boosts your business’s reputation – and trust me, blessings will flow back into your business in ways you can’t always predict.
5. Plan for Holidays and Special Occasions
Think ahead to events like Spring Day, Women’s Day, Christmas, and more. What campaigns can you run to get your brand in front of your audience?
Fun marketing drives like giveaways, competitions, or community events are great ways to encourage engagement and grow your presence. Online “click and share” giveaways, for example, are super effective.
6. Network and Collaborate
Look for opportunities to team up with other local businesses. Who in your circle has great ideas, resources, or a shared customer base?
I once partnered with a talented marketing guru to host a business breakfast for the chamber of commerce. It was something I couldn’t afford to do alone, but together, we pulled off an incredible event that left attendees inspired and impressed.
7. Say Yes to Networking Opportunities
Were you at the BNI Midvaal free networking event on the 22nd of May at Riviera on the Vaal? If not, you missed a golden opportunity! Getting to know other business owners is the secret to organic growth. We naturally prefer to work with people we know and trust.
8. Tidy Up Admin and Accounting
Clean out the cobwebs! Streamline your admin processes and ensure your books are accurate and up to date. Review your numbers monthly so you know exactly how your business is performing.
Be sure to include detailed financial goals in your 6-month, 1-year, and 5-year plans. (If you’re unsure where to start, there are loads of free templates and guides online to help you draft a business plan.)
9. Plan Your Team Structure
Your staff is both your biggest investment and your biggest expense. Take time to plan your organogram – you want to make sure every role is necessary and contributes to the business. Overhiring can cost you more than you realise.
10. Find and Fix Leaks
Where are you losing money? Is it time to renegotiate with suppliers or update your pricing? Are there expenses you can cut, or new offerings you can add? Remember, high turnover means nothing if your net profit isn’t where it should be. If your numbers are in the red, it’s time to investigate.
11. Outsource and Delegate Wisely
Value your time. Delegate tasks that fall below your level of expertise, and don’t be afraid to bring in professionals for things you’re not skilled in. Both strategies will free up your time to do what only you can do: lead and grow your business.
12. Take Care of Yourself
Work-life balance matters. Winter is a wonderful time to slow down just a little and focus on self-care. Pick up a hobby, get moving, and nourish your soul. These small habits can improve your life (and your productivity) tenfold.
There’s more than enough to keep every business owner busy and motivated during the winter months. If you tick off even a few of these tasks, your business will thank you in 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years from now.
